What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that causes your immune system to attack healthy tissues in your central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves). When you have MS, your immune system destroys the protective layer of myelin that covers nerve fibers.

You can think of myelin as the insulation layer on an electrical wire. Damage to the myelin sheath causes inflammation that leads to communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. Over time, MS can cause permanent nerve damage.

Signs and symptoms of MS vary depending on the location of the damaged nerve fibers. Common MS symptoms include:

• Slurred speech

Who gets multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis can strike at any age, but it’s most common in people age 15-60. The disease affects both men and women, but women are about twice as likely to get MS. Other factors that may increase your risk of developing MS include:

• Family history of MS
• Epstein-Barr virus infection
• Autoimmune diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes

Environmental factors, such as a Vitamin D deficiency and cigarette smoke, may also increase the risk of MS.

How do you diagnose and treat multiple sclerosis?

First, Dr. Ulrich performs a complete neurological exam and carefully reviews your symptoms and medical history. There’s no specific test for MS, but Dr. Ulrich may perform diagnostic tests, such as blood work or an MRI, to rule out other medical conditions that cause similar symptoms.

Then, he works with you to develop a personalized treatment plan to manage your MS symptoms. Depending on your needs, MS treatment may include:
