EMG Q & A
What is an EMG?
Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that can identify muscle damage. The test evaluates the nerve cells that control the muscles using electrical impulses that cause your muscles to contract and relax.
The technology translates these impulses into printed graphics that your provider at The Center for Neurology and Neurophysiology can review to identify abnormalities.
Why do I need an EMG?
Your provider may order EMG testing if you have pain or other symptoms that may indicate a disorder of the muscles or related nerves. These other symptoms may include:
- Tingling
- Weakness
- Muscle cramps
- Involuntary muscle spasms
An EMG is also an effective tool for evaluating paralysis, a condition where you’re unable to move your muscle due to nerve damage, injury, or another underlying medical condition.
What conditions can an EMG help diagnose?
There are several chronic neurological conditions that can cause chronic pain and involuntary muscle movements. These conditions may include:
- Pinched nerves
- Nerve disorders
- Muscular dystrophy
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
Your provider may use an EMG to confirm a diagnosis or rule out possible conditions that cause your muscle pain.
What can I expect during an EMG?
The first part of the EMG involves a nerve conduction study that requires your provider to place small electrodes on your skin to capture electrical signals. These signals provide information about how effectively your motor neurons are communicating with your muscles.
In the second part of the test, your provider inserts needle sensors that go directly into the tissue of your muscles to evaluate activity during the relaxation and contraction of the muscles.
The insertion of the needles may be uncomfortable or slightly painful, and your provider can provide options to improve your comfort.
How are the EMG results evaluated?
The Center for Neurology and Neurophysiology provider working with you can evaluate the graphs and other information the test provides.
Typically, any electrical activity that occurs when your muscle is at rest may indicate:
- Inflammation
- Muscle disorders
- Nerve disorders
If activity appears on the EMG results when your muscles are contracting, it can point to conditions like a nerve problem or a herniated disc.
Your provider reviews all of your test results and discusses your treatment options based on the diagnosis.
If you’re experiencing unexplained muscle pain, schedule a consultation online or by phone at the Frisco office today for an on-site EMG.
